X Games Aspen Through My Lens: High-Energy Moments from the Winter’s Biggest Stage
When the X Games roll into town, Aspen transforms. Spotlights illuminate the snowy slopes, the air buzzes with anticipation, and the world’s best action sports athletes prepare to push the limits of what’s possible. As an Aspen-based action sports photographer, I had the opportunity to capture the 2020 X Games for Aspen Snowmass—an assignment that blended adrenaline, artistry, and community pride.
Photographing the Pulse of a Global Event
From the very first lift of the morning fog to the final fireworks lighting up Buttermilk Mountain, I documented the full scope of the weekend. My lens followed athletes like Halldor Helgason, Henrik Harlaut, Scotty James, and local favorite Alex Ferreira, as they turned gravity-defying feats into unforgettable moments.
The atmosphere was electric. Whether it was Josh Bowman quietly prepping in the superpipe during a snowy dusk, or Taylor Seaton poised at the top of the drop-in during practice, each frame told a story of focus, tension, and pure love for the sport.
Moments That Mattered
Some of the highlights I captured include:
Alex Ferreira soaring above a packed crowd during his gold medal Ski Superpipe run—the first back-to-back win for an Aspen local.
Henrik Harlaut and Zeb Powell redefining style and creativity during Ski and Snowboard Knuckle Huck.
The camaraderie between athletes like Nico Porteus and Brendan MacKay, celebrating podium finishes with high-fives and hugs.
Behind-the-scenes lifestyle shots: autograph sessions, night training under spotlights, and candid moments that reflect the human side of extreme sports.
These moments weren’t just about winning—they were about pushing boundaries, celebrating community, and embracing the unpredictability of winter in Colorado.
In 2022, I had the honor of photographing the X Games once again—this time for ESPN. The assignment took me deeper into the event’s inner workings, from behind-the-scenes athlete prep to capturing career-defining moments on snow. My ESPN gallery showcases highlights from that year’s competitions, including crowd favorites, powder-blasted landings, and the raw emotion that defines X Games.
Why Action Sports Photography Matters
X Games Aspen isn’t just a competition—it’s a global stage for mountain culture. As a Colorado action sports photographer, I aim to go beyond just documenting tricks. My focus is on storytelling through movement, emotion, and atmosphere. I collaborate with brands like Aspen Snowmass to deliver impactful imagery that brings the energy of events like these to life—both on social media and in long-term marketing campaigns.
